A comic thriller that ain't so thrilling… or comic
One For The Money (12A)
Verdict: A horribly wasted opportunity
I was awaiting One For The Money
It is based on one of my favourite comic thrillers, the first
of an entertaining series of 19 crime novels by Janet Evanovich, about
Stephanie Plum, a tough, not very competent but sexy New Jersey bounty
The film wasn’t shown to critics here –
presumably because of the punishing U.S. reviews.
Miscast: Katherine Heigl (right) has an accent so bad it will go down in movie history
All the same, I’ve
made the effort to see it.
I’m sorry to relate that it is, indeed, a
disaster. Director Julie Anne Robinson never finds a convincing tone
and ruins everything with over-emphatic comedy reaction shots and a
music track that keeps telling us how funny everything is (it isn’t).
No one comes out of it well. Most
horribly miscast is Katherine Heigl. She commits career suicide as Plum,
with a New Jersey accent that’s so bad it is bound to pass into
This one won’t make money.
